The University of Nottingham—ranked 7th in the UK for research power—is offering bespoke postgraduate research opportunities for the 2025-26 academic year. These programs are designed for students aiming to pioneer new treatments and understand the molecular mechanisms of disease.
Research Streams
Students can specialize in several key areas within the Pharmacology and Drug Discovery grouping:
- Pharmacology: Study the effects of drugs on the body and vice versa (PK/PD).
- Molecular Pharmacology & Drug Discovery: Focus on the molecular basis of therapeutics.
- Cell Signaling: Investigation of intracellular pathways and protein-protein interactions.
- Clinical Chemistry: High-level research into biochemical diagnostics and monitoring.
Key Research Highlights
The University is home to COMPARE, a world-leading center of excellence specializing in:
- G-Protein-Coupled Receptors (GPCRs): Research into signaling, regulation, and “cross-talk” between pathways.
- Advanced Imaging: Using fluorescence correlation spectroscopy for single-molecule analysis of ligand-receptor interactions.
- Disease Focus: Genetic basis of Alzheimer’s and receptor trafficking in chronic diseases.
Program Comparison: PhD vs. MRes
| Feature | PhD (Doctor of Philosophy) | MRes (Masters by Research) |
| Duration | 3 to 4 Years (Full-time) | 12 Months (Full-time) |
| Focus | Deep-dive independent research | Research-heavy with taught skills training |
| Outcome | Thesis and Viva Voce exam | Research project + 20 credits of skills |
| Nature | Bespoke; specific to your interest | Flexible; allows for accredited taught credits |
