The Mehta Family School of Biosciences and Biomedical Engineering (BSBE) at the Indian Institute of Technology Indore (IIT Indore) invites online applications from motivated, research-oriented candidates for admission to its Ph.D. program.
The doctoral curriculum at MFS-BSBE promotes high-impact, interdisciplinary research at the intersection of biological sciences, engineering, and clinical translational technologies.

Eligibility Criteria & Qualifying Examinations
Candidates must meet the educational background requirements under any of the categories below, accompanied by a qualifying national examination:
Option A: Master’s Degree in Sciences / Pharmacy / Allied Disciplines
- Educational Qualification: Minimum First Class* Master’s degree in Life Sciences, Microbiology, Biotechnology, Bioinformatics, Physics, Biophysics, Chemistry, Biochemistry, Biomedical Science, Pharmacy, or equivalent PG degree.
- Qualifying Examination: Valid GATE qualification OR valid UGC/CSIR-JRF / DST-INSPIRE or equivalent national fellowship.
Option B: Master’s Degree in Engineering / Technology
- Educational Qualification: Minimum First Class* M.Tech / M.E. degree in Computer Science and Engineering, Electrical, Electronics, Mechanical, Biomedical, Chemical, Biotechnology, Pharmaceutical Engineering, Agricultural Engineering, or equivalent PG degree.
- Qualifying Examination: Valid GATE qualification OR valid UGC/CSIR-JRF / DST-INSPIRE or equivalent national fellowship.
Option C: Four-Year Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering / Technology
- Educational Qualification: Minimum First Class* in a 4-year Bachelor’s degree (B.Tech / B.E. / B.S.) in CSE, Electrical, Electronics, Mechanical, Biomedical, Chemical, Biotechnology, Pharmaceutical Engineering, Agricultural Engineering, or equivalent.
- Qualifying Examination: Valid GATE score OR valid UGC/CSIR-JRF / DST-INSPIRE or equivalent national fellowship.
*Definition of First Class
- For UR / EWS / OBC-NCL Candidates:
- Minimum 60% aggregate marks, OR
- First class declared by the degree-awarding university/institute, OR
- Minimum CGPA / CPI of 6.0 on a 10-point scale (or proportional equivalent).
- For SC / ST / PwD Candidates:
- Minimum 55% aggregate marks, OR
- First class declared by the degree-awarding university/institute, OR
- Minimum CGPA / CPI of 5.5 on a 10-point scale (or proportional equivalent).
Selection Process & Interview Guidelines
- Shortlisting: Meeting minimum eligibility criteria does not guarantee an interview call; shortlisting will be based on academic track record and fellowship credentials.
- Evaluation: Shortlisted applicants will undergo a written test and in-person interview at the IIT Indore campus. No online or remote interviews will be permitted.
- Travel Allowance: No TA/DA is provided for attending the selection process.
- Letters of Recommendation (LOR): Applicants must arrange a minimum of two LORs, sent directly to
bsbephdadmissions@iiti.ac.inor submitted in sealed envelopes at the time of the interview.
Application Procedure
- Submit the application exclusively online via the IIT Indore Ph.D. portal:
phdapply.iiti.ac.in. - Generating the online form will issue a unique Application Number.
- Pay the applicable application fee through SBI Collect as per institute guidelines.
- Candidates applying to more than one department must submit separate forms and fees for each program.
- Bring the signed hard copy of the submitted application form, SBI Collect payment receipt, recent photographs, LORs, and all original/self-attested academic mark sheets and certificates for in-person document scrutiny.
