NIBMG Kalyani Invites Applications for Life Sciences Roles in Diabetic Retinopathy Microbiome Study

The National Institute of Biomedical Genomics (NIBMG), Kalyani, an autonomous institute under the Department of Biotechnology, Ministry of Science & Technology, Government of India, is seeking applications for Project Linked Persons for its extramural project titled “Diabetic Retinopathy Microbiome Study-India (DRMS-India)” (Project Code: 20329).

The project focuses on understanding the link between gut bacteria and Diabetic Retinopathy (DR) through analyzing stool and blood samples, aiming to contribute to better understanding and potential treatment advancements. Selected candidates will be appointed up to September 30, 2026, with potential extensions based on performance and fund availability.

Detailed Responsibilities and Desirable Skills

Senior Project Associate (Wet Lab Focus)

  • Research Description Context: Responsible for hands-on human sample handling, human and microbial DNA/RNA isolation, primer designing, PCR, Real-Time PCR, DNA sequencing, and other molecular biological techniques involving human cell/microbial culture. Also responsible for project data management.
  • Nature of Work & Responsibilities: Designing and conducting experiments from clinical biospecimens, data gathering/organization/summarization, manuscript writing, inter-center coordination, experimental protocol writing, report preparation, contributing to grant applications, and training new personnel. Formulation of SOPs, maintaining GLP, proper documentation, and maintenance of stock/purchase indenting.
  • Desirable Qualification:
    1. Experience in biological sample handling, Human and Microbial DNA/RNA isolation, and related molecular biological experiments.
    2. Extensive hands-on experience in human cell culture/anaerobic microbial culture, in vitro functional assays, and related molecular and cell biology experiments.

Senior Data Analyst (Bioinformatics Focus)

  • Research Description Context: Responsible for handling high-throughput human and microbiome sequence data daily. Cataloguing changes in bacterial, viral, and fungal composition, gene families, and pathways from human microbiome samples using whole shotgun metagenome sequencing, and highlighting host-metagenomic interplay in diseased individuals.
  • Nature of Work & Responsibilities: Analysis of DNA, RNA sequence files from massively-parallel sequencing platforms, preparing summaries and reports of data analysis. Performing daily statistical analysis, assisting the Project PI for data interpretation and coordination, and developing newer analysis pipelines for human genomic and metagenomic data.
  • Desirable Qualification:
    1. Hands-on experience in DNA sequence data analysis from FASTQ files, particularly on Human genomic or Metagenomic samples using standard data analysis pipelines.
    2. Proficiency in Shotgun Metagenomics and 16S rRNA Gene Sequence data analysis.
    3. Good knowledge in Perl/Python, Linux, and R programming.
    4. Proficiency in English and good communication skills.
