THSTI Invites Applications for Ph.D. Program at Osaka University, Japan (April 2027 Intake)
Pharm'Up 
The Translational Health Science and Technology Institute (THSTI), an institute under the Department of Biotechnology, Govt. of India, is facilitating applications from Indian citizens for a Ph.D. program at Osaka University, Japan, with enrollment scheduled for April 2027.
The program is for the Doctoral Program in Microbiology and Immunology at the Osaka University Graduate School of Medicine.
Selection Process
The selection involves a three-stage screening process:
- Initial Screening: Conducted by the local selection committee at THSTI (completed by May 31, 2026).
- Joint Interview: Conducted by the selection committees of Osaka University and THSTI (held at THSTI).
- Final Confirmation: Made by the Osaka University Graduate School of Medicine.
Accepted students will receive a stipend for four years (April 2027 – March 2031).
Eligibility Criteria
Applicants must be non-Japanese nationals residing outside of Japan at the time of application and meet the following academic, language, and personal criteria:
(1) Academic Qualifications (Must be met by March 31, 2027)
Candidates must meet any of the following:
- 18 Years of Schooling: Completed or expect to complete eighteen (18) years of schooling in a country other than Japan.
- Equivalent Bachelor’s Degree: Received or expect to receive the equivalent of a bachelor’s degree through the completion of coursework requiring five (5) or more years of study at an overseas university (must be certified/designated by relevant agencies).
- Age and Recognized Capability: Be at least twenty-four (24) years of age as of March 31, 2027, and recognized by the Graduate School of Medicine as having academic capabilities equal to or greater than someone who has completed a degree in medicine, dentistry, veterinary medicine, or pharmacy.Special Note: If you have completed a 3-year Bachelor and 2-year Master program, you must have at least one additional year of employment as an educator or researcher after completing the Master’s program.
(2) English Language Proficiency
Applicants must demonstrate sufficient English language proficiency (Japanese is not required) with scores taken after December 2024:
- TOEFL-iBT: 80 or higher OR
- IELTS Academic Module: 6.5 or higher
(3) Required Qualities
Candidates should possess qualities such as strong interest in life sciences, curiosity, dedication, excellent communication skills that transcend academia, flexibility to incorporate interdisciplinary knowledge, an international mindset, and leadership skills.
