Bayer has announced a major strategic investment of $2.2 billion USD to construct a state-of-the-art pharmaceutical manufacturing campus in New Albany, Ohio. The multi-year project is designed to significantly scale the company’s domestic production capabilities, enhance supply chain resilience, and reinforce its footprint in the United States—its fastest-growing pharmaceutical market.
Project Scope and Economic Impact
The upcoming manufacturing campus will be situated within the New Albany International Business Park. Beyond boosting regional infrastructure, the project is projected to yield strong local economic benefits:
- Job Creation: The facility will create approximately 600 permanent, high-value jobs once fully operational.
- Construction Roles: An estimated 1,500 construction jobs will be generated throughout the building and development phase.
Modular Campus Design and Operational Timeline
The site will feature a flexible, modular architecture that integrates both drug substance and drug product manufacturing under advanced digital automation:
- First Module (Drug Substance): Slated to begin operations in 2031.
- Second Module (Drug Product): Planned to follow in 2034.
Initially, the campus will focus on supporting Bayer’s expanding portfolio across core therapeutic areas, including oncology, cardiovascular diseases, and renal care.
Strategic Growth and U.S. Footprint
This massive undertaking expands upon Bayer’s existing capital commitments, building on more than $7 billion USD spent on U.S. pharmaceutical R&D and manufacturing over the past five years.
The new Ohio location will seamlessly complement Bayer’s existing domestic presence, which includes its U.S. pharmaceuticals headquarters in Whippany, New Jersey, alongside major operational facilities in Pennsylvania, California, Massachusetts, and North Carolina. Furthermore, Bayer intends to cultivate a collaborative regional ecosystem that connects academic research institutions with advanced industrial manufacturing expertise.
Sebastian Guth, Global Chief Operating Officer of Bayer Pharmaceuticals and President of Bayer U.S., emphasized that the expansion is a crucial milestone for addressing increasing demands from patients and customers both domestically and internationally.
