
Applications are invited for the temporary position of Junior Research Fellow (JRF) at the Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute for Medical Sciences and Technology (SCTIMST), an Institution of National Importance under the Department of Science and Technology, Govt. of India. SCTIMST offers excellent research and training facilities in the joint culture of medicine and technology.
This JRF will work on the ANRF Funded Project (P#5509) titled: “A molecular understanding of mitochondrial disorder in an Indian patient cohort: a new avenue for molecular diagnosis, therapeutics, and disease management.”
Qualifications and Compensation Details
Essential Requirements
- Education: First-class Master’s Degree in Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Biotechnology, or Human Genetics.
- Aptitude: NET qualified or equivalent.
Desirable Experience
- One year of research experience in: biochemical assays, enzyme assays, General Molecular biology experiments (like DNA isolation from blood and tissues, primer design, PCR, qPCR, Sanger sequencing), and basic bioinformatics.
Salary, Age, and Tenure
- Monthly Emoluments: ₹37,000/- + 20% HRA.
- Age Limit: 35 years as on 01.11.2025.
- Number of Vacancies:1 (Existing – SC).
- (Note: Consideration order is SC, followed by ST if no eligible SC candidates are found, and then UR if no eligible ST candidates are found).
- Nature/Tenure: Temporary (Purely on contract), initially for a period till September 19, 2026. This tenure is likely to be extended till September 19, 2028, or till completion of the project, whichever is earlier.
Job Description: Key Responsibilities
The Project Staff will be responsible for coordinating patient appointments, sample collection, clinical data collection and entry, and communication with other participating centers. The JRF must be able to independently perform the following tasks:
- Collect blood samples from OPD and wards.
- Record and accurately enter clinical data in case record forms and electronic databases.
- Perform respiratory chain analysis in blood and muscle tissue, biochemical enzyme assays, and ELISA.
- Isolate genomic DNA from blood cells.
- Conduct PCR, qPCR, and Sanger sequencing.
- Perform genetic analysis, including variant interpretation.
- Undertake any other experiments or assignments as instructed by the Principal Investigator.
