Novo Nordisk Surges on 41% Obesity Sales Growth and Strategic MASH Pipeline Expansion, Despite DKK 9 Billion Restructuring Hit

Pharm'Up 3 min read

Novo Nordisk A/S, the Danish pharmaceutical giant, today released a robust financial report for the first nine months of 2025, showcasing strong underlying growth driven by its blockbuster obesity and metabolic care portfolio, alongside aggressive strategic moves to expand its pipeline into high-growth therapeutic areas like MASH (metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis).

Financial Performance: Growth Despite Transformation Costs

The company’s total sales climbed 15% at Constant Exchange Rates (CER) to DKK 229.9 billion (up 12% in Danish kroner), demonstrating powerful momentum across both its U.S. and International Operations.

However, reported operating profit growth was tempered by a significant, one-time investment in the company’s future.

  • Operating Profit: Rose 10% at CER (5% in Danish kroner) to DKK 95.9 billion.
  • Restructuring Impact: This figure was impacted by approximately DKK 9 billion in one-off restructuring costs related to a company-wide transformation programme aimed at streamlining operations and reinvesting for growth. Excluding this charge, the underlying operating profit growth would have been substantially higher, at 21% at CER.

Obesity Drives Exceptional Market Leadership

Novo Nordisk’s core Diabetes & Obesity care unit generated sales of DKK 215.7 billion (up 15% at CER). The growth was overwhelmingly led by the obesity portfolio:

  • Obesity Care Sales: Surged an outstanding 41% at CER (37% in Danish kroner), reaching nearly DKK 60 billion. This cements the company’s dominance in the rapidly expanding weight management market.
  • GLP-1 Diabetes Treatments: Sales grew a solid 10% at CER (7% in local currency), reflecting continued high demand, although growth has moderated amid intensifying competition.
  • Rare-Disease Sales: The portfolio posted strong gains, increasing 13% at CER (10% in Danish kroner).

Major Pipeline and Strategic Milestones

The company announced several key achievements that signal its strategic intent to diversify and future-proof its business:

  • Wegovy Approval for MASH: The U.S. FDA granted approval for the use of Wegovy (semaglutide) to treat MASH, a chronic liver disease, opening up a substantial new indication for the blockbuster drug.
  • Strategic Acquisition: Novo Nordisk agreed to acquire Akero Therapeutics, Inc., gaining a promising Phase 3 FGF21 analogue to further strengthen its MASH pipeline with a potential best-in-class asset.
  • Rare Disease Advancement: Regulatory submissions were filed in both the EU and U.S. for Mim8, advancing new treatment options within its rare-disease portfolio.
  • New Obesity Candidate: The company initiated a Phase 3 trial for Cagrilintide, a potential first-in-class amylin-based monotherapy for weight management, adding depth beyond the GLP-1 class.

CEO Commentary and Outlook Adjustment

Chief Executive Officer Mike Doustdar commented on the results, noting that the organizational transformation is already delivering efficiencies. “We delivered solid growth across our business while investing in a future pipeline that has the potential to redefine chronic-disease treatment,” he said.

The company has narrowed its full-year 2025 guidance to reflect the one-off transformation expenses and evolving market dynamics, particularly the intensifying competition in the GLP-1 segment:

Metric (at CER)Previous GuidanceNew Guidance
Sales Growth8–14%8–11%
Operating Profit Growth10–16%4–7%

The company forecasts a negative full-year impact of approximately DKK 8 billion from the transformation expenses.

The combination of robust current performance, particularly in obesity, a broadening pipeline with significant acquisitions, and aggressive operational transformation positions Novo Nordisk to sustain its market leadership and tackle future challenges, including fierce competition from rivals like Eli Lilly.
