Pharmacists Play a Vital Role in Ensuring Proper Inhaler Use for Patients

Pharm'Up 2 min read

A recent podcast, “Pharmacy Focus,” featured Jennifer Griffin, PharmD, MS, who discussed how pharmacists are critical to ensuring patients use their inhalers correctly. Inhalers are vital for managing chronic respiratory conditions, but their effectiveness depends entirely on proper technique. Unfortunately, many patients make common mistakes, which can lead to poor health outcomes.

The Importance of Hands-On Counseling

Griffin emphasizes that a pharmacist’s role goes beyond just dispensing medication. They are uniquely positioned to provide comprehensive, hands-on counseling. This involves:

  • Demonstrating Proper Technique: Pharmacists can show patients exactly how to use their specific inhaler device, correcting common errors like incorrect breathing, failing to hold their breath after inhalation, or not waiting between puffs.
  • Patient-Centered Education: Counseling sessions should be tailored to the individual’s needs, considering their age, health literacy, and physical abilities. For children or elderly patients, including a caregiver in the counseling session can be crucial for ensuring proper use at home.
  • Ongoing Follow-Up: Pharmacists should track a patient’s prescription refill history to monitor adherence and encourage follow-up visits. This continued support helps patients feel empowered and reinforces that their pharmacist is a trusted resource for any questions or concerns.

Beyond the Pharmacy Counter

Proper inhaler counseling is a continuous process. Pharmacists must stay up-to-date on new inhaler devices and guidelines through continuing education. By providing this vital service, pharmacists can significantly improve patient outcomes, helping them effectively manage their respiratory conditions and reduce the risk of severe flare-ups.
