Biocon Limited, a leading global biopharmaceutical company, has announced the launch of its generic GLP-1 peptide, Liraglutide, in the Netherlands. This launch marks a major milestone as the first country in the European Union where Biocon is introducing the product under its own brand identity.
In partnership with distribution expert Pharmamedic B.V., the therapy will be available in two distinct formulations:
- Diavorin®: Indicated for the treatment of Type 2 Diabetes (comparable to Victoza®).
- Vobexoryn®: Indicated for chronic weight management (comparable to Saxenda®).
Strategic Importance for Biocon
The launch follows a rigorous approval process by the Medicines Evaluation Board (MEB) of the Netherlands. For Biocon, this move signifies a shift toward a direct-to-market strategy in Europe, leveraging its vertically integrated manufacturing capabilities.
“The launch of Liraglutide in the Netherlands marks a significant milestone in expanding Biocon’s GLP-1 portfolio… Launching Diavorin® and Vobexoryn® under our own brand in Europe reflects our scientific and manufacturing excellence.” — Siddharth Mittal, CEO and Managing Director, Biocon Limited.
About the Therapy: Liraglutide
Liraglutide is a synthetic GLP-1 (Glucagon-like peptide-1) analog administered via a once-daily subcutaneous injection. It works by:
- Lowering Blood Sugar: Stimulating insulin secretion and inhibiting glucagon release.
- Promoting Weight Loss: Slowing gastric emptying and increasing feelings of fullness to reduce food intake.
The drug-device combination is designed to be patient-friendly, ensuring precise dosing for those managing chronic metabolic conditions.
Global Reach and Affordability
By providing a high-quality, affordable alternative to branded GLP-1s, Biocon aims to support more sustainable healthcare systems in Europe. The company is uniquely positioned as one of the few global players with the capability to produce both biosimilar insulins and generic GLP-1 peptides at scale.
