Cipla Enters Anti-Obesity Market with Launch of Yurpeak® (Tirzepatide) in India

Pharm'Up 2 min read

Cipla Limited has officially announced the launch of Yurpeak® (tirzepatide), marking a landmark entry into the high-growth weight management and diabetes care segment. This launch follows a strategic partnership with global pharmaceutical giant Eli Lilly, granting Cipla the rights to distribute and promote this breakthrough therapy across the Indian market.

Yurpeak® is the second brand of tirzepatide to be introduced in India, following the launch of Lilly’s innovator brand, Mounjaro®.

Breakthrough “Dual Agonist” Technology

Tirzepatide is a first-in-class medicine that works by mimicking two natural gut hormones:

  1. GIP (Glucose-dependent Insulinotropic Polypeptide)
  2. GLP-1 (Glucagon-like Peptide-1)

This unique dual-action mechanism not only regulates blood sugar levels more effectively than traditional therapies but also significantly reduces appetite and slows digestion, leading to substantial weight loss.

Indication and Usage

The Drug Controller General of India (DCGI) has approved Yurpeak® for:

  • Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus: As an adjunct to diet and exercise to improve glycemic control.
  • Chronic Weight Management: For adults with a BMI of 30 or greater (obese), or a BMI of 27 or greater (overweight) who also have at least one weight-related condition (such as hypertension or heart disease).

Precise Dosing via KwikPen®

To ensure patient convenience and accurate administration, Yurpeak® is available in a pre-filled KwikPen® device. It is a once-weekly injectable therapy offered in six different strengths:

  • Low Dose: 2.5 mg and 5 mg
  • Maintenance Dose: 7.5 mg and 10 mg
  • High Dose: 12.5 mg and 15 mg

Strategy: Accessibility Beyond Metros

A core objective of this partnership is to bridge the gap in healthcare access. While advanced biologics are often concentrated in urban centers, Cipla plans to leverage its massive distribution network to take Yurpeak® to Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities.

Lilly will continue to handle the manufacturing and supply, while Cipla will focus on marketing and medical education. Notably, Yurpeak® will maintain price parity with Mounjaro®, ensuring a standardized cost for patients regardless of the brand choice.

“The launch of Yurpeak marks a transformative moment. We are stepping into obesity care with the same commitment and scale that define our leadership in respiratory care.” — Achin Gupta, Global COO, Cipla Limited.

Patient Support and Safety

Cipla is rolling out comprehensive support programs to guide patients on:

  • Correct self-administration techniques.
  • Managing potential side effects (like nausea or gastrointestinal discomfort).
  • Adopting sustainable lifestyle and dietary changes to maximize the drug’s benefits.
