In a massive boost to the Irish life sciences sector, pharmaceutical giant Novo Nordisk has announced a €432 million (DKK 3.2 billion) investment to expand its manufacturing facility in Athlone. The move is a strategic response to the unprecedented global surge in demand for oral GLP-1 therapies, which are used to treat type 2 diabetes and obesity.
Boosting Capacity for the “Tablet Revolution”
The investment targets the company’s existing tablet production site in Monksland. Unlike the more common injectable versions of GLP-1 medications (such as Ozempic or Wegovy), the Athlone facility specializes in oral delivery systems. The upgrades will significantly increase production volume and enhance the site’s technical ability to manufacture complex, high-demand oral medicines.
A Strategic Export Hub
Once completed, the Athlone campus will serve as a primary supply hub for international markets outside the United States. This positioning makes Ireland a cornerstone for distributing life-changing treatments across Europe, Asia, and other global regions, streamlining the supply chain for millions of patients.
Economic Impact and Timeline
The expansion is expected to have a significant ripple effect on the local economy:
- Job Creation: Approximately 500 new construction jobs will be supported during the build phase.
- Workforce Stability: The existing workforce of 260 employees will transition into managing the high-tech, scaled-up production lines.
- Phased Rollout: Construction is currently underway. Full operational scaling is projected to begin in late 2027 and reach peak capacity by 2028.
Kasper Bødker Mejlvang, Executive Vice President for Product Supply, emphasized that Ireland remains a “cornerstone” of Novo Nordisk’s global network, citing the country’s skilled workforce and commitment to innovation as key factors in the decision.
