The Council of Scientific & Industrial Research (CSIR) is inviting applications for its prestigious Emeritus Scientist (ES) Scheme. This initiative is designed to provide financial support to outstanding superannuated scientists, allowing them to continue their valuable research. As part of this scheme, several opportunities are available for promising young researchers to assist these scientists.
Here is a detailed breakdown of the available positions and the eligibility criteria for candidates with B.Pharm, M.Pharm, or M.Sc. degrees.
Junior Research Fellowship (JRF-ship)
This fellowship is for candidates beginning their research journey.
- Eligibility: To be considered, you need a B.Pharm, M.Sc., or an equivalent four-year degree with at least 55% marks. Crucially, you must also have passed the CSIR-UGC National Eligibility Test (NET) or GATE.
- Age Limit: The upper age limit is 28 years. A relaxation of up to 5 years is available for candidates from Scheduled Castes/Tribes/OBC, women, and physically handicapped individuals.
- Selection Process: Selection is based on a national-level written test conducted jointly by CSIR and UGC. This single, multiple-choice question paper has three parts:
- Part A: General science and research aptitude questions.
- Part B: Subject-specific conventional questions.
- Part C: Higher-value questions to test scientific concepts and their application.
- Stipend: The stipend starts at ₹37,000 per month for the first two years. After a performance review, it increases to ₹42,000 per month for the third year and beyond, at which point your designation will be upgraded to Senior Research Fellow (SRF).
Senior Research Fellowship (SRF-ship)
The SRF position is for candidates with some prior research experience.
- Eligibility: You must have an M.Sc., B.Pharm, or an equivalent degree with a minimum of two years of post-M.Sc. research experience, supported by published papers in standard refereed journals. An M.Pharm or equivalent degree also qualifies you to apply.
- Age Limit: The upper age limit is 32 years, with the same 5-year relaxation for specific categories.
- Selection Process: SRFs can be selected directly by CSIR based on academic records, published work, and an interview. Alternatively, candidates who have cleared the NET/GATE exam and have at least two years of post-M.Sc. research experience can be appointed. Non-NET/GATE qualified candidates with two years of research experience may also be selected through a national advertisement and an interview with an expert committee.
- Stipend: The stipend is a fixed ₹42,000 per month.
Research Associateship (RA-ship)
This is the most advanced position for experienced researchers.
- Eligibility: To be an RA, you need a doctorate degree such as a Ph.D., MD, or MS. If you have an M.Pharm, you must have three years of research, teaching, or design and development experience.
- Age Limit: The upper age limit is 35 years, with a 5-year relaxation for specific categories.
- Selection Process: Similar to the SRF selection process, RAs can be directly appointed by CSIR or selected through an interview process at the host institution, with final approval from CSIR.
- Stipend: RAs receive a consolidated stipend based on their qualifications and experience, with three slabs: ₹58,000, ₹61,000, or ₹67,000 per month.
General Information for All Schemes
- Financial Assistance: In addition to the stipends listed above, fellows and associates are eligible for House Rent Allowance (HRA) and a Medical Allowance (MA), as determined by the rules of the host institution.
- Application Procedure: Applications for JRF-NET are invited online twice a year. For other positions, details will be made available on the CSIR-HRDG website.
- Tenure: The total tenure for a JRF + SRF is capped at five years. The normal tenure for an RA is three years.
The CSIR Emeritus Scientist Scheme is a valuable opportunity for talented researchers to contribute to significant scientific projects and advance their careers under the guidance of accomplished scientists.
