India to Scale Up Jan Aushadhi Network to 25,000 Outlets by March 2027

Pharm'Up 2 min read

The Government of India has announced an ambitious roadmap to expand the reach of affordable healthcare under the Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Janaushadhi Pariyojana (PMBJP). The Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilizers has officially set a target to increase the number of Jan Aushadhi Kendras (JAKs) to 25,000 across the country by March 2027.

Union Minister of State, Smt. Anupriya Patel, shared these details in a written response to the Rajya Sabha, highlighting the transformative growth of the scheme over the last decade.

Exponential Growth and Accessibility

The scheme, which aims to provide high-quality generic medicines at significantly lower costs than branded alternatives, has seen a meteoric rise:

  • 2014: Only 80 functional outlets nationwide.
  • November 2025: 17,610 functional outlets serving citizens.
  • Goal for 2027: 25,000 outlets to ensure last-mile availability.

This massive expansion represents the government’s commitment to reducing the “out-of-pocket” expenditure on healthcare for the common man.

Rising Public Confidence and Economic Viability

The momentum behind the scheme is fueled by increasing public trust in the quality of generic drugs. Key performance indicators from the last financial year demonstrate this shift:

  • Network Expansion: The number of stores grew by 37% in a single year.
  • Sales Value: Total sales (MRP value) surged by 38%, indicating that more patients are choosing Jan Aushadhi products over expensive branded medicines.

The growing product basket—which now includes not just medicines but also surgical items, nutraceuticals, and Ayurvedic products—has made opening a Kendra a highly viable business opportunity for local entrepreneurs.

How to Join the Network

The government continues to invite applications to open new Jan Aushadhi Kendras. The program is open to:

  1. Individual Entrepreneurs (specifically pharmacists).
  2. Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) and Societies.
  3. Trusts, Firms, and Private Companies.

Interested parties can apply through the official digital portal at janaushadhi.gov.in. The application process is streamlined and online, covering all states and union territories, including major focus areas like Andhra Pradesh.

Socio-Economic Impact

Beyond healthcare, the PMBJP scheme is serving as a major engine for self-employment. By encouraging youth and pharmacists to set up these centers, the government is fostering entrepreneurship while simultaneously ensuring that “Quality Medicines at Affordable Prices” is not just a slogan, but a reality for every Indian household.
