
India’s journey toward “Aatmanirbharta” (self-reliance) in the healthcare sector has reached a major milestone. Under the federal Production Linked Incentive (PLI) Scheme, 36 critical, high-end medical devices are now being manufactured domestically, significantly reducing the country’s reliance on expensive imports.
These indigenously produced devices are currently available at prices 10% to 30% lower than their imported counterparts, making advanced healthcare more affordable for millions of Indian patients.
A Specialized Portfolio: From MRI to Heart Valves
The manufacturing push covers a vast array of sophisticated therapeutic and diagnostic segments. The domestic production now includes:
- Imaging & Diagnostics: MRI machines, CT scans, Mammography units, C-arm systems, Cath labs, and Ultrasonography machines.
- Oncology & Radiation: Linear Accelerators (LINAC), Laser ablation systems, and Rotational cobalt machines.
- Critical Care: Intensive care ventilators, Anaesthesia workstations, and Oxygen concentrators.
- Cardiology & Renal Care: Heart valves, Stents, PTCA balloon catheters, and Dialysis machines.
- Implants: High-quality Hip and Knee implants.
The Infrastructure Backbone: Medical Device Parks
To sustain this growth, the government is establishing dedicated Medical Device Parks in Uttar Pradesh (Greater Noida), Madhya Pradesh (Ujjain), and Tamil Nadu (Kanchipuram). These parks provide:
- Plug-and-Play Infrastructure: Ready-to-use facilities that reduce upfront capital costs for manufacturers.
- Shared Common Facilities: Access to 3D printing, sterilization units, gamma radiation facilities, and advanced testing labs (biocompatibility, toxicology, and EMI/EMC).
- Subsidized Utilities: Concessional rates for land, electricity, and water to ensure long-term operational sustainability.
Powering Innovation: PRIP and Skill Development
Beyond manufacturing, the Promotion of Research in Pharma-Medtech Sector (PRIP) scheme is fostering an ecosystem of innovation. With a financial outlay aimed at industry-academia collaboration, the government has set up a Centre of Excellence at NIPER, Ahmedabad to focus on specialized MedTech research.
To address the demand for a technical workforce, the Capacity Building sub-scheme has already approved 18 applications for postgraduate and skill-development courses. These programs aim to create 750 training seats over three years, with the first batch of 187 candidates already enrolled.
Strategic Impact
By combining financial incentives with world-class infrastructure and a skilled workforce, India is rapidly transforming from a net importer to a global hub for medical technology. The shift not only secures India’s healthcare supply chain but also positions Indian-made medical devices as competitive alternatives in the global market.
