The European Molecular Biology Organization (EMBO) is officially inviting applications for its prestigious Postdoctoral Fellowships. This program is a premier opportunity for Indian researchers in the life sciences to gain international experience, access world-class laboratories, and join an elite global network of scientists.
Unlike many grants that are restricted to European citizens, EMBO fellowships are open to excellent researchers worldwide, provided they meet the international mobility requirements.
Eligibility Checklist
To ensure your application is considered, you must meet several strict criteria regarding timing and publication history:
- PhD Timeline: You must hold a PhD (or equivalent) at the start of the fellowship. If you already have your degree, it must have been obtained within the two years prior to your application date.
- Publication Record: You must have at least one first-author publication in an international peer-reviewed journal.Note: EMBO now accepts refereed preprints as equivalent to a first-author paper, provided the reviews are from an independent service.
- The Mobility Rule: This is the most critical requirement. You must move between countries.
- You cannot apply to work in the country where you obtained your PhD.
- You cannot return to a lab where you have previously worked for more than six months.
- You must have been at your host lab for less than six months at the time of application.
Fellowship Benefits
The EMBO fellowship is designed to support not just the research, but the scientist’s life and career development:
- Duration: Up to two years of funding.
- Financial Support: A competitive salary or stipend, relocation allowance, and additional support for fellows with children.
- Career Development: Awardees attend an EMBO Laboratory Leadership course, which provides essential management skills for future Principal Investigators.
- Networking: Immediate entry into the global EMBO Fellows network.
Selection Process & Deadlines
Applications are accepted year-round, but they are evaluated in two distinct cycles.
| Evaluation Cycle | Submission Deadline | Results Announced |
| Spring Round | 4th Friday of January (14:00 CET) | Mid-June |
| Autumn Round | 2nd Friday of July (14:00 CEST) | Mid-December |
The Evaluation Journey:
- Pre-screening: The Fellowship Committee reviews achievements and the proposed project’s biological significance. About 25% are selected for the next stage.
- Interview: Shortlisted candidates are interviewed by an EMBO Member or Young Investigator.
- Final Decision: The committee evaluates the novelty of the research and the appropriateness of the host lab.
Crucial Update for 2026: Starting with the Autumn round, a host laboratory may only support one candidate per selection round. If multiple people apply to the same lab, the lab will be asked to withdraw the extra applications.
How to Apply
All applications must be submitted through the EMBO online system. Ensure you have:
- Two professional references.
- An acceptance letter from your receiving host institute.
- A research proposal that is not a direct continuation of your PhD work.
