Understanding Rickets in Children

Pharm'Up 2 min read

Rickets is a skeletal disorder that primarily affects children, leading to soft and weak bones. It is most commonly caused by a prolonged deficiency in Vitamin D, which is essential for the body to absorb the calcium and phosphorus necessary for building strong, healthy bone tissue.

How Vitamin D Affects Bone Health

Think of Vitamin D as the “key” that unlocks the body’s ability to use minerals. Even if a child consumes enough calcium, without Vitamin D, that calcium cannot be deposited into the bone matrix.

  • Dietary Causes: Lack of Vitamin D-rich foods (fish, eggs, fortified milk) or strict diets (vegan/lactose intolerant) without supplementation.
  • Lack of Sunlight: Sunlight is a primary source of Vitamin D. Factors like dark skin (which filters more UV), excessive sunscreen use, or staying indoors can block this natural production.
  • Absorption Issues: Conditions like Celiac disease or inflammatory bowel diseases can prevent the intestines from absorbing Vitamin D even if it is consumed.

Symptoms and Physical Signs

Rickets often manifests through noticeable physical changes as the soft bones struggle to support the child’s weight or grow properly:

  • Bone Deformities: Most notably bowed legs or “knock-knees.”
  • Growth Issues: Delayed growth or short stature.
  • Skeletal Pain: Tenderness or aching in the spine, pelvis, and legs.
  • Dental Defects: Weak tooth enamel, delayed tooth eruption, and increased cavities.
  • “Rachitic Rosary”: Beaded appearance of the ribs where they join the breastbone.

Diagnosis and Recovery

Diagnosis

Doctors typically use a combination of three approaches to confirm Rickets:

  1. Physical Exam: Checking for bone tenderness and visible deformities.
  2. Blood Tests: Measuring levels of calcium, phosphorus, and specific Vitamin D metabolites.
  3. X-rays: Looking for irregularities at the “growth plates” (the areas of active bone growth), which often appear widened or frayed in children with Rickets.

Treatment

The good news is that most cases of Rickets are treatable by restoring the missing nutrients:

  • Supplements: High doses of Vitamin D and calcium.
  • Dietary Changes: Increasing intake of fatty fish, liver, and fortified cereals.
  • Sunlight Exposure: Moderate, safe exposure to UV rays.
  • Corrective Bracing/Surgery: In severe cases of bowing, braces or surgery may be required to realign the bones as they strengthen.
